7 Day Itinerary Greece – The Basics
Currency = Euro
The currency in Greece is the Euro (EUR)
1 USD = .90 Euro
Many places in Greece will accept card payments but I find it helpful to keep some cash for small purchases. Cash on hand helps if you are out to dinner and plan to split the bill with others. In most European cities they will not split the bill with card payments.
Having small bills is also helpful if you are negotiating at local markets. There are also plenty of ATMs around the islands.
Language = Greek
Although Greek is the official language, you will find that many people speak English in the popular tourist destinations in Greece. It is helpful to have the Google Translate app downloaded on your phone. And if you don’t speak the language I would prepare a few basic phrases and sentences in Greek just to be polite.
Phone & Internet
Overall, the phone and internet service was pretty good. You’ll likely find hotels and cafes with wifi available just about anywhere you visit. However, I did notice that the phone service in Athens and Mykonos was much better than in Santorini.
While traveling internationally, I suggest using an eSIM for affordable cellular data. Airalo makes it easy to purchase and install an eSIM suitable for the destination you are visiting. Purchase data with Airalo here.
Daily Budget
Your budget will vary depending on where you visit. This guide covers Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos which can be expensive. An average budget for this 7 day itinerary to Greece would be about $100 per day on a low to mid-range budget.
Tipping in Mykonos
Tipping in Greece is optional. Yet, if you have nice service it’s not uncommon to leave a gratuity between 5% and 10%. When on excursions, like sailing and catamaran cruises, it’s always typical to tip your crew.
Is The Tap Water Drinkable?
Don’t drink the tap water on the islands. However, it is okay to brush your teeth with tap water.
7 Day Itinerary Greece
Day 1: Arrive in Athens
Arrive in Athens
We are starting this one-week Greece itinerary in the country’s capital, Athens. You’ll fly into Athens International Airport and take the train to the city center.
Athens is well worth a spot on your Greece itinerary, the city is lovely. It’s very walkable, there are so many fascinating ancient sites to see, and beautiful neighborhoods to explore.
There are many great hotels and hostels in Athens. I stayed at Athens Hub Hostel and I couldn’t recommend it more. Search for places to stay in Athens here.
The Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum in Athens is home to a vast collection of artifacts from the Acropolis site. For those interested in Greek history and culture, the Acropolis Museum is a must.
The Acropolis Museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day. You can purchase tickets ahead of time here.
Anafiotika Neighborhood
Anafiotika is the most charming little neighborhood in Athens. Its vibrant aesthetic reminds me of Santorini. If you are a photographer, you can’t miss Anafiotika.
Greek Cuisine
End your first day in Athens with a traditional Greek meal at a local taverna. There are countless amazing Greek spots in Athens. One of my favorites is Geros Tou Moria. They serve authentic Greek dishes in a cozy setting.
Read here for all of the traditional dishes you should try while in Greece!
Day 2: Ancient Athens
If you have more time in Athens, check out my detailed city guide with more things to do in the city here.
The Acropolis
You simply can’t visit Athens without a visit to the Acropolis. The Acropolis is an ancient city and home to many remains of ancient buildings. The Parthenon is the most famous part of the Acropolis and was a temple dedicated to Goddess Athena.
I suggest visiting the Acropolis first thing in the morning because it gets very crowded and hot quickly. In the summertime, they will close the Acropolis if it’s too hot outside.
Book your tickets to the Acropolis here.
Roman Agora and Ancient Agora
To learn more about Ancient Athens, visit the Roman Agora and the Ancient Agora. The Ancient Agora was the heart of ancient Athens, serving as a commercial and social center of the city. It was a busy marketplace and meeting point in ancient Athens. You can visit the Temple of Hephaestus at the Ancient Agora.
The Roman Agora is located near the Ancient Agora and served as the administrative center of Roman Athens. It was built during the Roman period and was constructed to supplement the functions of the Ancient Agora.
Book a combo ticket here that gives you access to the Acropolis and 6 Archaeological sites in Athens.
Explore Plaka
The Plaka neighborhood is known for its vibrant restaurant and shopping scene and charming streets. Spend the afternoon exploring Plaka.
Day 3: Take the Ferry from Athens to Mykonos
Arrive in Mykonos
Next on this 7 day itinerary to Greece, it’s time to head to Mykonos. You’ll either fly or take the ferry from Athens to Mykonos. Mykonos is known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife scene.
There are many amazing places to stay in Mykonos. I suggest the Acrogiali Beach Hotel. It’s located right on Platis Gialos Beach – the perfect area. Book a hotel in Mykonos here. Once you check into your accommodation, head to Chora – which is Mykonos Town.
Book your ferry from Athens to Mykonos here.
Explore the Town of Mykonos, Chora
Mykonos Town (Chora) is seriously the most charming place. You can walk everywhere – there are so many cute boutiques, cafes, bars, and restaurants. I suggest spending the afternoon wandering around the cobblestone streets of Mykonos Town.
While you are here you can visit the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, the famous windmills, and Little Venice. The Mykonos windmills overlook the Mediterranean right near Little Venice, it’s such a great photo spot in Mykonos.
You should defintely grab dinner by the water in Little Venice while you are here!
Mykonos Nightlife
Mykonos is known for its lively club scene, if you like to enjoy a night out – you can’t miss the nightlife in Mykonos.
Mykonos Nightlife Recommendations:
- Paradise Beach
- Tropicana
- Cavo Paradiso
- Scorpios
Read more about Mykonos here in my Mykonos travel guide.
Day 4: Mykonos Beach Day
Relax at The Beach
A trip to Mykonos isn’t complete without a beach day. I’ve listed a few of the best beaches in Mykonos below.
Best Beaches in Mykonos:
- Paraga Beach
- Platis Gialos Beach
- Ornos Beach
- Paradise Beach
- Lia Beach
- Psarou Beach
Watch the Sunset at Scorpios
Next, you’ll want to spend the rest of your day at Scorpios. It’s the most vibey, relaxing place I’ve ever been to. Scorpios is a beach club in Mykonos and although it does get busy in the evening it’s actually a relaxing spot to watch the sunset with a few drinks and appetizers.
Their food and cocktails are incredible and you can sit on couches right in the sand to watch the sunset. Scorpios has a restaurant, bar, beach club, and boutique.
Day 5: Ferry from Mykonos to Santorini
Arrive in Santorini
Santorini is one of the most famous Greek islands known for its picturesque views, cliffside paths, and volcanic landscape. The ferry from Mykonos to Santorini will take about 2 to 3 hours. Once you check into your hotel, head down to Ammoudi Bay in Oia.
I stayed in Oia and loved staying in this location. Book hotels in Oia, Santorini here.
Cliff Jumping at Ammoudi Bay
Cliff jumping at Ammoudi Bay is one of the best things to do in Santorini. It’s a bit confusing to find the route down to the water, but look for the large brown-colored stairs and follow those down to the sea.
It’s a hike – about 300 stairs down. So just be prepared. Once at the bottom, go left through the restaurants along the water and then climb around the rocks to get here. It’s a popular spot so others will likely be heading to the same place.
Sunset in Oia
No trip to Santorini is complete without watching the iconic sunset in Oia. Pick up some wine and find a spot (it gets very crowded) to watch one of the best sunsets in the world.
Oia Castle is a popular place to watch the sunset but it fills up quickly so get here at least an hour early if you want a good spot at Oia Castle.
Day 6: Highlights of Santorini
Sunrise Photos in Oia
Watching the sunrise in Oia is something I’ll never forget. It was an early wake-up call but boy was it worth it. Yes, the sunset in Oia is amazing but it’s flooded with crowds of people. If you wake up for sunrise, you’ll feel as though you have the city to yourself. It’s the most magical time of day in Oia.
Sunrise is also the perfect time to get all of the iconic Santorini Instagram photos. Discover all of the best Santorini photo spots here in this guide.
Wine Tasting
Wine tasting in Santorini was a highlight of my trip. If you are a wine lover, I highly suggest booking a wine-tasting tour in Santorini. I booked mine through Get Your Guide and we visited three unique wineries on this guided tour.
It was the most amazing day! This is the Santorini wine tour that I did.
Sunset Catamaran Cruise
Another iconic sunset spot in Santorini is from the sea. There is no better way to spend the evening than by enjoying the sea and the sun with unlimited wine.
Again, another favorite in Santorini. You have to do it! We booked a 6-hour catamaran cruise that included snorkeling, a Greek dinner, unlimited wine, a swim near Red Beach, volcano hot springs, and more.
Book a sunset catamaran cruise here.
Day 7: Final day in Santorini
Explore Fira
Because you’ve spent a good amount of time in Oia, spend today in Fira. Fira is the capital of Santorini known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
In Fira, you’ll find the most amazing panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and neighboring islands because the town is situated on the edge of the caldera. You’ll have to visit the famous Three Bells of Fira and there is plenty of shopping to do.
Fira is also known for its fantastic culinary delights. You’ll find numerous tavernas, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy. There is also a vibrant nightlife scene in Fira you can enjoy if you choose to stay late.
Fira to Oia Hike
If you are up for a scenic walk in Santorini, you can’t miss the hike from Fira to Oia. This is one of the most popular walking trails on the island. The hike is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and typically takes anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours.
Most people start the hike in Fira and follow the cliffside path towards Oia. You’ll pass through the villages of Imerovigli and Firostefani along the way.
Possible Trip Extensions:
- Ios: If you have more time to spend in Greece, consider visiting Ios. Ios is another Greek island known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant nightlife.
- Crete: Crete is the largest Greek island.
- Naxos: For charming villages, ancient ruins, and picturesque beaches, consider adding Naxos to your itinerary.
- Paros: Paros is a popular destination for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are plenty of water spots and beautiful beaches here in Paros.

When is The Best Time to Visit Greece?
Shoulder season is the best time to visit Greece. This is between September and October and April to May. During this time there will be fewer crowds and the weather is typically nice.
Although you can visit Greece during the summer, I’d suggest avoiding it. Places such as Santorini with its tiny narrow streets will be overly crowded with tourists making it hard to enjoy.
If you want to avoid the stress of planning your trip to Greece, I highly suggest traveling with the tour company, EF Ultimate Break. They make traveling a breeze and their Greece itineraries are amazing!
