London Bucket List – The Basics

Currency = British Pound

1 USD  = .81 Pound Sterling

Many places in London will accept card payments but I find it helpful to keep a bit of cash for small purchases. Cash is helpful if you need to tip a guide, split a bill, or shop at local markets. There are also plenty of ATMs throughout the city.

Language = English

The national language in the UK is English.

Phone & Internet

You shouldn’t have a problem with phone service and wifi in London. From my experience, I never had an issue with the phone and internet service in the city. There was cell service just about everywhere. A majority of the cafes and restaurants had wifi available.

For traveling internationally, I suggest using an eSIM for affordable cellular data when you travel. The Airalo app makes it easy to purchase and install an eSIM suitable for the destination you are visiting. Check out Airalo here.

Daily Budget

London is not necessarily a budget-friendly city but it is possible to travel on somewhat of a budget. A mid-range daily budget for London is about 120 pounds. However, if you stay at a hostel, do free activities, and eat at local markets it is possible to spend as little as 50 to 70 pounds per day.

Tipping in London

It is customary to tip around 10% to 15% of the bill with eating out at restaurants. At times restaurants will add an automatic tip to your bill instead. This is called a service charge.

Can You Drink The Tap Water?

Tap water is safe to drink in London.

The Weather in London

You can expect the weather from June to September to be warmer and this is high season so expect more crowds. It will be much cooler from November to February. As for rain, it rains in London year-round so make sure you pack accordingly. Pack a rain jacket and a compact umbrella.

How to Get Around London

The best way to get around London is the Tube. This is the city’s underground public transit system. It’s easy to use and very affordable. I suggest purchasing an Oyster Card if you will be using the Tube for your primary mode of transportation.

You can purchase Oyster Cards at all tube stations, some visitor centers, and some DLR stations.

Make sure to have Google Maps downloaded, this way you can navigate the tube using your phone.

Alternatively, you can also use rideshare or taxis. Uber is available in London – another great transportation option. However, traffic can be bad so typically it’s quicker and more affordable to take the Tube.
