Background on Italian Restaurant Culture
It’s important to be aware of Italian restaurant culture because you’ll notice it’s quite different dining in Italy than in places such as the United States. Restaurant culture here in Italy is deeply rooted in family and tradition. It’s a time for families and friends to gather to share a meal – so you’ll notice that meal times are longer than in the US.
Italian meals are typically structured into multiple courses including antipasto (appetizer), primo (first course), secondo, (main course), contorno (side dish), and dolce (dessert). A coffee might follow the meal. Espresso culture is big in Italy, and the perfect way to finish off a meal!
Meal times are late in Italy, many eat as late as 9 or 10 PM. Also, know that some restaurants have a coperto, which is a cover charge that includes the cost of bread and table service. Additionally, know that unlike in America – waiters are not rushing your meal. You’ll likely have to ask for the bill, they won’t bring it out on their own like dining in the US.

Rome is a dream to visit year-round, but the best time to visit Rome is from October through April. During this time there will be fewer tourists, which means better travel deals.
The weather will also be cooler. If you want to avoid cold weather, consider visiting during shoulder season in the spring, mid-March through early May.
Both times I’ve visited Rome have been during the summer. From my experience, I still had an amazing time. There were larger crowds and it was hot. If you go in the dead of summer expect very high temperatures.
