Kona to Hilo Drive: How to Roadtrip The Big Island

If you are planning to road trip the Big Island, here is everything you need to know before you embark on the Kona to Hilo drive. 

There is so much to see on the Big Island of Hawaii. To make the most out of your trip I suggest making time to stay on both sides of the island – Hilo and Kona. Because you can’t fly from one end of the island to the other, you have to road trip it. 

In this guide, I’m sharing all three route options depending on what sites you want to see and the amount of time you have. I’ve also included many frequently asked questions when making the Kona to Hilo drive (or vice versa) later in this travel guide. Alright, let’s get into the article!

Background on The Big Island 

The Island of Hawaii, often referred to as the Big Island, is – you guessed it – the largest island in Hawaii. It’s also the youngest of the Hawaiian islands, it’s formed by five volcanoes and two of those are still active – Mauna Loa and Kilauea. 

The Big Island is very geologically, culturally, and ecologically diverse, making it a unique and fascinating destination to visit. The two largest cities on the island are Hilo and Kailua-Kona. They are about 77 miles apart and many visitors will road trip from one to the other. Hilo is located on the eastern side and Kona is on the western side of the island. 

Although both cities have an airport, you can’t fly between the two. Travelers will typically rent a car to drive from one side of the island to the other. 

How to Have a Scenic Drive from Hilo to Kona: 3 Unique Routes & Must-Visit Stops 

1. Kona to Hilo Drive Northern Route – Most Scenic Route 

If you want to see lush green waterfalls, you should take the northern route. This route will take just about 2 hours without traffic and is considered the most scenic. The northern part of the island gets the most rainfall, making this the greenest and most lush area of Hawaii Island. 

You can also stop in the city of Waimea which is very unique compared to other parts of the Big Island. Waimea is considered the heart of paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country, the city has a rich ranching heritage. 

Route 1 – What to See Along The Way: 

• Waimea: A must-visit little cow town. It’s home to America’s 10th largest ranch. 
• Waipio Valley Lookout: A stunning lookout point. Make sure you have your camera! 
• Akaka Falls: One of the most popular falls on Hawaii Island. It’s a quick detour and a short walk to the falls. 
• Pu’uwa’awa’a (Cupcake Mountain): A great stop for a restroom break and a hike. 

2. Kona to Hilo Drive Southern Route – Longest Route 

The southern Kona to Hilo Drive is the longest. It will take you about 3 hours without stopping to get from one city to the other. You’ll take the scenic Mamalahoa Highway and Hawaii Belt Road. This is the best route to take if you want to stop at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

There are various scenic stops along the way. I’ve listed a few more below. 

Route 2 – What to See Along The Way: 

• Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: Visit Thurston Lava Tube, Kilauea Caldera, and other sites in the park.  
• Captain Cook Monument
• South Point: Also known as, Ka Lae, is the southernmost point of the Big Island of Hawaii. You can go cliff jumping, fishing, and visit a green sand beach (Papakolea Beach)! 
• Volcano Winery: Near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you can stop at Volcano Winery. Here you can try a variety of wines made from locally sourced ingredients. 
• Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historic Park: For a glimpse of Hawaiian culture, stop here. You can explore temples, ponds, and a reconstructed village. You can also stop by the Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau Black Sand Beach near the park. 
• Coffee Farms: South Kona is known for its coffee farms. Enjoy some fresh Kona coffee if you have the time. 

3. Middle Route – Quickest Route 

The fastest way to get from Kona to Hilo is via Saddle Road. Without traffic, it should take around 1.5 to 2 hours from downtown Kona to downtown Hilo. If you want to simply get from one place to another quickly, I suggest taking the middle route. 

 Make sure you pack some snacks and are full of fuel because there are not many rest stops along the way. If you are driving at night, it is very dark – so watch out for animals. 

Near Hilo, you can stop at Kaumana Caves. This is a lava tube system that is easily accessible from Saddle Road. The caves were formed during an eruption of Mauna Loa in 1881. There is an area to park along Kaumana Drive and a stairway leading down to the cave entrance making it easily accessible for visitors. 

If you are looking to make a scenic road trip out of this drive, consider taking the northern or southern route. Although there isn’t much to see on the quicker route from Kona to Hilo, you will drive between Mauna Kea (the world’s tallest mountain – technically taller than Mount Everest) and Mauna Loa (the world’s largest volcano).

Route 3 – What to See Along The Way:

• Drive between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa
• Mauna Kea rest stop 
• Mauna Kea Visitor Center and Summit 
• Kaumana Caves: This is a lava tube system located near Hilo.  

Kona to Hilo Drive: Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Kona to Hilo Drive? 

Depending on the route you take, the Kona to Hilo drive will take you anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. Keep in mind that weather, road conditions, and detours can affect travel times. 

Is it Safe to Drive from Kona to Hilo?

If you are comfortable with driving long distances, yes it’s completely safe. All roads are paved.

Can You Book a Kona to Hilo Shuttle?

Yes, there is a Kona to Hilo shuttle. It’s the Hele-On Bust offered by Hawaii County, there is a route directly between Kona and Hilo. The bus costs $2 per person and will take around 2.5 hours from city to city.

Keep in mind, you won’t get to stop and sightsee along the way but this is a great option if you are on a budget or don’t want to rent a car.
