I’m an American living in Sydney, Australia, and I wanted to escape the Sydney winter for somewhere a bit warmer up the coast, so I hopped on a flight and visited a friend in Hamilton Island for the weekend. This made for the perfect weekend trip from Sydney.

It was great getting to spend time with a friend, and because she had been living here in Hamilton Island for quite some time, she was able to show me all the best spots and things to do in Hamilton Island. In this guide, we’ll cover all this and more, and some helpful travel tips to know before booking your trip.

Alright, let’s get into the best way to spend a weekend in Hamilton Island, Australia.

Why Hamilton Island Is Worth the Trip from Sydney

This region of the East Coast of Australia has to be one of my favorites. I first visited Airlie Beach on a tour with Intro Travel a few years back, and while I was on that tour, I sailed around the Whitsunday Islands and visited the famous Whitehaven Beach (the most beautiful beach I’ve visited, it’s stunning).

Since then, I have always wanted to come back and tick Hamilton Island off my list. This was seriously the perfect long weekend trip from Sydney to visit a good friend living here, and I got to experience this area in an entirely different way.

Hamilton Island is a quick flight from Sydney and truly feels like an island paradise. If you want a little escape from the big city, Hamilton Island is well worth it.

Hamilton Island is part of the Whitsunday Islands, which is a group of 74 islands off Queensland’s central coast, and there are so many different activities to do on and around the island. It’s a great base to explore the Great Barrier Reef, the famous Whitehaven Beach, and so much more.

It truly is paradise on earth, and I highly recommend the visit! Even if only for a weekend.

How to Get to Hamilton Island from Sydney

Alright, you have two options here. You can either fly into Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) or Proserpine Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP).

Hamilton Island Airport (HTI)

There are direct flights from Sydney to Hamilton Island Airport with Qantas and Virgin Australia. The flight is about 2 and a half hours.

Proserpine Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP)

On the other hand, you can fly into the Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) in Proserpine, and from here you will take a shuttle to Airlie Beach and then the ferry to Hamilton Island. This makes for a longer travel day, but sometimes the flights will be much cheaper.

I would honestly just book a flight directly to Hamilton Island. It saves you so much time and is so convenient. This is where I flew into, and it’s only about 1 km from the town center, and almost all of the hotels on the island have airport shuttles or buggies where they offer complimentary pick up.

Getting Around Hamilton Island

I just love how buggies are the primary form of transportation here! The only other place I have visited that’s like this is Harbour Island in the Bahamas. It’s just so tropical and island-y. It’s the best way to get around.

Anyways, cars are banned on Hamilton Island, so golf buggies are how you get around. That being said, you don’t need to rent one. There are free shuttle buses that run three routes around the island, so you can get wherever you need to go.

The island also isn’t massive, so you can walk to many places. If you do want to hire a buggie, they are about $130 AUD per day, and you do need to be over 21 and have a valid licence. Make sure to pre-book before arrival as well.

Sometimes, if you are staying in an Airbnb, the home might come with a buggy for you to use during your time.

I personally did not rent a golf cart; I really didn’t need one. I took the public bus or walked just about everywhere. Also, my friends had one to drive around, so we ended up taking that a couple of times. If you want to save a bit of money, don’t worry about a buggy. However, it is a fun way to get around.

The Best Things to Do in Hamilton Island

1. Take a Day Trip to Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach is hands down one of the most (if not THE most) beautiful beaches I have ever visited. Think miles of the whitest sand you’ve ever seen and the clearest blue waters.

From Hamilton Island, it’s about 11 km away, a 30-minute boat trip. And one and a half hours from Airlie Beach if you are coming from there. There are plenty of tour options from Hamilton Island, and it’s best to go in the morning to avoid crowds. It’s a good time to see the Hill Inlet, the swirling sand patterns are so stunning.

You can book half-day or full-day tours from Hamilton Island. I actually didn’t visit Whitehaven on this trip to Hamilton Island. I ended up visiting when I was staying in Airlie Beach and did a sailing trip from Airlie.

You can learn more about Airlie Beach here, and if you want to read more about sailing in the Whitsundays, check out my guide here.

Anyways, we stopped for a few hours here at Whitehaven during our boat trip, and wow was it amazing. We went to the stunning lookout point where you can see the swirling blue waters against the white sand. And then spent some time in the water. We saw little reef sharks and rays, and it was so cool. I also flew my drone and got some amazing content. This beach was truly paradise on earth.

Note: If you want to visit the iconic Whitehaven Beach lookout spot, Hill Inlet, make sure your tour includes this. Many tours will only take you down to the beach, so if this is something on your list, keep this in mind when choosing your tour. Book a Whitehaven Beach tour here. 🏝️

2. Take a Scenic Flight or Helicopter Over the Great Barrier Reef

Okay, this was at the very top of my Hamilton Island bucket list when I visited. When I had previously gone to Airlie Beach, a group of people on my tour did this, and I regretted not doing it because it looked incredible.

I mean, what’s better than seeing one of the natural wonders of the world from below and above? Anyways, I booked my scenic flight with Hamilton Island Air, and this was truly one of the most incredible travel experiences I’ve had. The reef is massive, and all the gorgeous blue and turquoise colors were magical.

I will say the plane was tiny, and I was a bit nervous as it was a windy day. But our pilot was great, and we had a wonderful experience. Once you’re up there experiencing the view, it’s all well worth it. You’ll even get to see the famous Heart Reef from above. It’s an unreal experience.

Hamilton Island is not cheap, and this was not a cheap activity. However, I will say this was worth the splurge. If you are deciding on where to spend vs save, I really think the scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef was so worth it and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

3. Watch the Sunset at One Tree Hill

A must! This is the spot for sunset on the island. Take a golf cart or the public bus up to One Tree Hill to enjoy a cocktail and the sunset. The hill offers panoramic views over the Whitsunday Islands. It’s a laid-back atmosphere and incredibly scenic. Don’t forget your camera.

I do suggest getting here a bit before sunrise to get a good spot. Because this is the best sunset spot on the island, it does get busy, especially during the weekends.

4. Hike to Passage Peak for Sunrise

I loved all the hiking trails around the island. There are signs to help make the paths clear, and if you have any questions, the hotel and staff around the island can point you in the right direction.

If you’re up for it, you should hike to Passage Peak for sunrise. This is the highest point on the island, so obviously the views are incredible. The trail starts from the eastern end of Catseye Beach, and it will take you about one hour each way.

You can take the scenic trail, then connect to the Saddle Trail to reach the summit. Here, you’ll find panoramic views over the Whitsundays and one of the best sunrise spots in Queensland. It’s really not too difficult, and the view from the top makes it all worth it.

I did a solo hike on the island, and because it wasn’t the nicest weather this morning, I went after the sun had risen. I grabbed a coffee and made my way to the trails. It wasn’t too busy at all, and it was a relatively easy hike. It was a great way to start my morning, and the views along the way were amazing. Definitely add this to your Hamilton Island itinerary.

5. Spot Wildlife on the Island

You’ll see so many animals here! The second I arrived, there were cockatoos everywhere and little wallabies all over the island. They are the cutest. Obviously, respect their space and don’t get too close, although they are very used to people being around.

This island is LOUD with all the birds. It seriously sounds like you’re in a zoo at times. I’ve actually never heard birds so loud as here in Australia; it’s crazy. Do not feed the cockatoos, and do NOT leave your hotel room doors open! The birds will come inside and destroy your things, so yeah, keep this in mind.

You can also visit Hamilton Island Wildlife Park; it’s perfect for a coffee and seeing these beautiful animals. It’s small, so don’t expect too much. But the park is open from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, so it’s a great stop in the morning. Entry is free! Especially great if you have kids.

6. Relax at Catseye Beach

Catseye Beach is the main beach on the island, right in front of all the resorts. I stayed at the Reef View Hotel (more on where to stay in Hamilton Island later in the guide), but this was right near Catseye Beach.

The beach is massive, it’s calm, so it’s great for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Water sports gear is available for hire right on the beach.

I visited in June, and it was honestly pretty bad weather, so I didn’t get to enjoy the beach entirely, but it was nice to relax on. Super calm, and it’s stunning at sunrise and sunset.

The Beach Club resort overlooks it, so it’s nice for a drink at the pool bar even if you aren’t staying here. There are also chairs all along the beach, so plenty of places to sit.

7. Eat Your Way Around the Island

Okay, now onto all of the food. Hamilton Island has some great restaurants. Here are a few of my favorite spots to eat around the island.

Coca Chu: This is a Southeast Asian hawker-style share plates spot on Catseye Beach. It’s perfect for groups. My friends and I went here on my first night, and the food and drinks were delish.

Popeye’s Fish & Chips: Classic fish & chips by the marina, a great spot for a casual meal.

The Long Pavilion at Qualia: This is one of THE best meals I’ve ever had. And this restaurant inside this hotel is stunning. If you want to dine here, you’ll have to try to snag a reservation well in advance of your trip.

Marina Cafe: A great spot for breakfast, brunch, or a quick lunch overlooking the marina.

Bob’s Bakery: This little spot is famous for its pies, sausage rolls, pastries, and grab-and-go breakfasts.

Pool Terrace Restaurant: This is inside the Reef View Hotel, and it’s a nice casual spot for lunch.

One Tree Hill: Mentioned earlier in the guide, this is the best spot on the island for a cocktail and sunset.

8. Snorkel or Dive the Great Barrier Reef

Hamilton Island is the perfect place for Great Barrier Reef day trips. You can book one through GetYourGuide that will take you snorkeling or diving on the Great Barrier Reef. You can book half-day tours or full-day tours that will include lunch, snorkel gear, and fun activities on the water.

On a separate trip to Airlie Beach, I spent three days on a boat sailing the Whitsunday Islands, and this was seriously such a highlight. I couldn’t recommend it more. The water is stunning, and experiencing one of the natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef, is a must.

9. Go Whale Watching (June to September)

If you are here in Hamilton Island during June to September, you’ve got to do a whale watching tour! During this time, humpback whales pass through on their east coast migration, and they are some of the most amazing animals to see.

Cruises will depart from the marina, and you can also spot them from the Clubhouse Restaurant on Dent Island. This is an unforgettable experience if you’re here during whale season. I did not go on a whale watching cruise while in Hamilton, but I have gone on one in Sydney, and it was amazing.

Where to Stay in Hamilton Island?

Reef View Hotel

I stayed at the Reef View Hotel during my trip, and it was great. It’s the main resort, very centrally located, family-friendly, and there’s a large range of room types. There are also a couple of restaurants here. Book here.

Qualia

This is the definition of luxury. It’s gorgeous. Honestly, it would be a dream to stay here. It’s the most exclusive stay on the island. And yes, it is a high price point, but if you’re into boutique stays, you need to check out Qualia. If anything, try to get a reservation for dinner at their restaurant, The Long Pavilion; it’s amazing. Book here.

The Sundays

This is a newer boutique hotel on the island. It’s more accessible than Qualia but still stunning. Book The Sundays here.

Beach Club

This is an adults-only hotel right on Catseye Beach. It’s also got an infinity pool. Book Beach Club here.

Location-wise, you’ll notice that this island is tiny. You really can walk just about everywhere if you want. So no matter where you stay, you’ll be in a pretty central location. Even if you choose to stay at an Airbnb, it will be central and likely come with a buggy to drive around!

Hamilton Island Long Weekend Itinerary (Friday–Sunday from Sydney)

If you are doing a long weekend in Hamilton Island from Sydney, as I did, here’s an itinerary you can follow or switch things up depending on what activities you want to do.

Friday: Fly Up and Settle In

Morning/midday: Fly from Sydney to Hamilton Island. It’s about a 2.5-hour flight. Once you arrive, the island and airport are tiny, you’ll get your bag shortly, then hop on a buggy or hotel shuttle to your accommodation.

Afternoon: Check in to your hotel and explore the island. You can pop into a couple of shops or visit Catseye Beach for a later afternoon swim.

Evening: Head to Coca Chu for a delish Southeast Asian dinner.

Saturday: Whitehaven + Passage Peak

Morning: Get up bright and early to do the Passage Peak sunrise hike. You can grab a coffee and a snack from Bob’s Bakery afterwards. And then book a half-day trip to go see Whitehaven Beach, arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Afternoon: Grab lunch at one of the many delish spots on the island and relax at the beach or the pool. Then, for sunset, head up to One Tree Hill for an evening cocktail and gorgeous view.

Evening: Have a nice dinner at The Long Pavilion at Qualia or another spot on the island. Dinner at Qualia was truly a highlight; it was incredible.

Sunday: Reef + Relax

Morning: Have a nice breakfast at Marina Cafe, the perfect way to start your day.

Afternoon: If you are staying the full day today, I suggest booking a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef or doing a half-day snorkeling tour.

Evening: Enjoy one last dinner and sunset on Hamilton Island before heading back to Sydney the next day. If you are flying back on a Sunday evening, then make the most of your last morning here before heading back.

Top Tips for Visiting Hamilton Island

  • Book Whitehaven Beach tours well in advance. They sell out fast on weekends and school holidays
  • Pre-book your buggy before you arrive. If you do want to hire a buggy, availability can be limited in peak season
  • Download the Hamilton Island app before you fly; it has live activity schedules, restaurant bookings, and food ordering. It really is so helpful; everything you need to know is on this app.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, you’ll be in and around protected marine park waters
  • Book restaurant reservations in advance, especially for The Long Pavilion at Qualia

Stinger season note: Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are most active in Queensland waters from around October/November through May. Tours provide full-body Lycra stinger suits, and you should always wear one when instructed. If swimming independently at Catseye Beach during these months, use the netted stinger enclosures. Vinegar is used to treat stings; tour boats carry it on board. Hamilton Island also has a medical centre with antivenom. This is something I genuinely didn’t know about before visiting Queensland in summer, so it’s just good to be aware!

FAQs | Things to Do in Hamilton Island

Is Hamilton Island worth visiting for a weekend?

Absolutely! Hamilton Island is truly paradise on earth. It’s so tropical, beautiful, with blue waters, so many cute animals. And I just love how there are basically no cars on the island.

It’s so worth even just a weekend trip from Sydney. And not to mention, one of the natural wonders of the world is right here to visit. The scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef and a visit to Whitehaven Beach are some of my favorite travel experiences, and I’ve traveled to over 50 countries.

You can really do a lot in only three days. Of course, stay longer if you can, but this has to be one of my favorite areas of Australia. It’s amazing.

How do you get to Hamilton Island from Sydney?

You can fly directly from Sydney Airport to Hamilton Island with Qantas or Virgin Australia. Unfortunately, Jetstar doesn’t have this flight route anymore.

You’ll fly directly into Hamilton Island Airport (HTI); I suggest searching for flights with Google Flights or Skyscanner. Alternatively, you can fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) in Proserpine, as I mentioned earlier in this guide, and then take a shuttle to Airlie Beach and the ferry across.

Do you need a car on Hamilton Island?

Nope! Cars are banned. You get around the island by golf buggies and the free shuttle buses that run three routes around the island. You can hire a buggy (they are so much fun!), but you don’t need to. You can get anywhere on foot or via the free public bus.

What is the best time of year to visit Hamilton Island?

May through October is the dry season in Hamilton Island. April through June is a great time to visit, as it’s after the summer crowds and it’s still warm. Whale watching season is June to September, if that’s a priority for you.

Something to keep in mind when traveling in Queensland: stinger season runs from around October/November to May. During this time, box jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish can be present in the water, and you are required to wear stinger suits on tours, or at least strongly recommended to. I do think it’s rare to actually get stung, though. But better safe than sorry.

I visited at the very end of June, and I will say, the weather wasn’t the nicest — I think it was just a random bad weekend — but it wasn’t really warm enough to get in the water.

On the other hand, when I was sailing around the Whitsunday Islands in February (the dead of summer), it was HOT, but it was also stinger season, so we did have to wear stinger suits. Which was fine, they’re basically like wetsuits, just a bit annoying to take on and off.

things to do in hamilton island

How far is Whitehaven Beach from Hamilton Island?

It’s about 30 minutes by boat, so pretty easy to reach. Visiting Whitehaven Beach is one of the best things to do in Hamilton Island, and it’s a must. There are plenty of boat trips you can book that will take you out to this gorgeous beach and other nice spots around the area.

Whitehaven Beach is much closer to Hamilton Island than to Airlie Beach (Airlie Beach is about an hour and a half by boat), and tours to Whitehaven Beach depart from Hamilton Island Marina.

How many days do you need on Hamilton Island?

Hamilton Island is small; three days or a long weekend is plenty to hit the highlights. Of course, you could spend a week or more exploring the surrounding islands and doing all the activities.

With three full days, you can enjoy Catseye Beach, see the Great Barrier Reef from either above or below, visit the iconic Whitehaven Beach, do the hiking trails, and explore all the delicious restaurants on the island.

Is Hamilton Island good for a girls’ trip?

Absolutely! Hamilton Island is a great girls’ trip destination. You can relax by the beach and the pools, book into the spa, do some amazing activities, and of course, lots of girl dinners and hikes.

This was essentially a girls’ trip for me as I was visiting my friend who lives here, and we ended up going out with some of her friends on the island. It was seriously a blast and a place that I think everyone should experience.
