I’ve spent a fair amount of time in Bangkok and I absolutely love this city. After visiting over 50 countries, Thailand is near the top of my list. I lived just outside of Bangkok during a semester abroad in college and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Sukhumvit 

Sukhumvit is Bangkok’s bustling modern neighborhood perfect for those looking for convenience and nightlife. There are extravagant rooftop bars, luxury shopping, and incredible restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. This area is very well connected and has easy access to the BTS Skytrain. 

Must-Visit: Terminal 21 shopping mall, Octave Rooftop Bar, Thonglor area 

Siam Square

If you’re traveling with your family or interested in Bangkok’s shopping scene, Siam Square would be a great place to base yourself. Siam Square is the heart of the city’s shopping and entertainment district. 

You’ll find iconic malls such as MBK, CentralWorld, and Siam Paragon – a must-visit. The malls in Bangkok are unlike any other malls. Siam Square is also very well connected making it easy to reach other parts of the city.

Khao San

If you are looking to party and don’t mind a bit of noise, then Khao San is the area for you. The nightlife is never ending here and there is always something to do. This is a popular area for backpackers as it’s budget-friendly and very lively, and there is plenty of amazing street food. 

Khao San is a great area for solo travelers, it’s a good place to meet other travelers. Khao San is also great if you are on a budget as you can find very affordable accommodation. 

I do love this area and you have to experience it at least once while in Bangkok but it’s not necessarily my first pick on where to stay just because of the noise. 

Must Visit: Street food stalls, rooftop bars 

Chinatown

Photographers and foodies will love this area. Chinatown in Bangkok is a MUST to visit but also a good area to base yourself in the city. You’ll find bustling street markets, unreal street food, and rich cultural experiences. 

I suggest visiting Laoteng while you are here. It’s a delicious dim sum spot with a fun speakeasy upstairs. You should also visit Chinatown at night. The street lit up is such a vibe, you have to experience it. 

Must Visit: Yaowarat Road for street food, Chinatown Gate, Wat Traimit 

Dusit

Dusit is quiet and less touristy. If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city, consider staying here. In Dusit, you’ll get a glimpse of a more traditional side of Bangkok. There are several royal palaces, parks, and unique museums to explore. 

Must-Visit: Vimanmek Mansion, Dusit Zoo

Thonburi

Thonburi has a more local and authentic feel located across the Chao Phraya River. This is where Wat Arun is (a temple you can’t miss in Bangkok). Thonburi is a great area to base yourself for a more local experience, canal tours, and temple visits. 

Must Visit: Wat Arun, Artist’s House 

Bangkok Old Town

This is the historical heart of Bangkok. The Old Town is one of the best places to stay in Bangkok for first timers who want to experience Bangkok’s rich history and culture. 

Bangkok Old Town is where you’ll find The Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Wat Arun is very close as well. If you are prioritizing sightseeing, consider staying in Bangkok Old Town. 

Must Visit: The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew, Bangkok National Museum

Silom is the financial district of Bangkok. This area is a great mix of business and leisure. Silom is great for business travelers or those looking for good nightlife. 

Sky Bar at Lebua is in this area of Bangkok as well as the beautiful Lumpini Park. This neighborhood offers luxury hotels, diverse dining options, and rooftop bars.

I love the Sofitel properties. If you are looking for French luxury in Bangkok, stay at the gorgeous Sofitel Hotel. I’ve stayed at the Sofitel properties in both Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand and both were absolutely amazing.

If you are looking for a place to stay with an incredible view, I suggest staying at the Sala Rattanakosin. This is a beautiful boutique property in the Old City area that oversees the stunning Wat Arun temple. 

The views of the river and the temple are truly magical. The Sala Rattanakosin is a wonderful and unique place to stay in Bangkok. This property also has a delicious restaurant on site.

Old Capital Bike Inn

This is a charming eco-friendly boutique hotel located in Bangkok’s Old Town. They offer free bike tours and complimentary breakfast. The property is very close to must-see attractions making it a perfect place to stay in Bangkok for first-timers.  

Ad Lib Bangkok

A stunning boutique hotel in Bangkok with a gorgeous pool, modern amenities, and quaint rooms. The best area to stay in Bangkok depends on your travel preferences. If you’re looking for a quieter, more relaxed vibe – perfect for families–consider staying in Thonburi or Dusit. For families who want easy access to shopping and entertainment, Siam Square is an excellent choice.

Where not to stay in Bangkok for the first time?

In terms of where not to stay in Bangkok, don’t stay in remote areas and areas far from public transportation. You will spend a lot more of your time driving from place to place in taxis and Grabs. 

I also don’t suggest staying near Don Mueang airport. It’s far from Bangkok attractions; yes it’s convenient for low-cost flights but it’s not ideal for first-time travelers wanting to explore the city. 

Where is the best stay in Thailand for first-timers? 

For first-time travelers who want to be in a convenient location, Bangkok Old Town, Sukhumvik, or Siam Square are a few of the best places to stay in Bangkok for first timers.

How much does it cost to stay in Bangkok for a week? 

The cost of staying in Bangkok for a week can vary depending on travel style and budget. If you are a budget traveler you can find hostels for as little as $10 to $20 per night. Eating street food (the best) and spending little on transportation and activities, as with a low-end budget expect to spend about $130 to $200 per week. Thailand is very budget-friendly! 

Mid-range travelers, expect to spend about $300 to $500 per week in Bangkok. For a mid-range hotel expect to pay about 30 to 80 and food with cost anywhere from 10 to 30 per day.

If you are a luxury traveler, the sky is truly the limit, there are luxury hotels, fine dining, world-class spas, and an incredible shopping scene. I’d say a luxury budget in Bangkok is $1000+ per week.

Where to go in Bangkok at night? 

Bangkok has a vibrant nightlife scene that caters to every type of traveler. Start by exploring one of the city’s famous night markets, where you can shop for souvenirs, enjoy delicious street food, and soak in the lively atmosphere. 

Khao San Road is a must-visit for backpackers. This buzzing street is perfect for meeting fellow travelers, enjoying live music, and experiencing Bangkok’s club scene. Plus, you’ll find plenty of amazing street food on Khao San Road. 

For a more upscale experience, head to one of Bangkok’s sky bars. Visit the iconic Sky Bar, famous for its breathtaking view and its appearance in The Hangover Part II. Other great options include Tichuca and Vanilla Sky, both offering stunning rooftop views.

Is Bangkok a walkable city? 

Short answer, no. Bangkok is a massive city with so many different areas. To make the most of your time here, plan what you’d like to see, stick to this area, and plan your days accordingly. 

For instance, when you visit Bangkok Old Town you can do a lot in this one area. Visit Wat Pho, Wat Arun, The Grand Palace, and more. All of these temples are within walking distance.

How many days for Bangkok is enough? 

To get a taste of this city I suggest 3 to 5 days in Bangkok. I understand if you aren’t a city person and want to head down south to Thailand’s beaches or up north to the mountains. But I do really think Bangkok is an amazing city and deserves at least a couple of days on your itinerary.
