Where is Waiheke Island?
Waiheke is an island located in the Hauraki Gulf. It’s accessible directly from downtown Auckland (and other areas around Auckland) by water and air. Waiheke makes a wonderful day trip from Auckland or some will stay on the island for multiple days.
How to Get to Waiheke Island?
The most common way to reach Waiheke Island is by ferry. There are multiple ferry options, the most popular being Fuller360. The ferries depart from downtown Auckland, at the Auckland Ferry Terminal. This is also known as the Downtown Ferry Terminal and it’s located on Quay Street.
Find it here: Quay Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand
The ferries begin at 6 AM and run very frequently throughout the day. The journey from Auckland to Waiheke will take about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the ferry operator and specific route.
Another common ferry operator in Auckland is Sealink. Both services offer multiple departure times throughout the day, allowing you to choose a schedule that best suits your plans.

How long is the ferry ride from Auckland to Waiheke Island?
From downtown Auckland, Waiheke is about a 35-minute ferry ride, and from Half Moon Bay, it’s about a 45-minute ferry ride. The trip isn’t too long at all. The time will depend on the ferry operator and the route that you take.
Once you arrive at Waiheke Island, the ferry will dock at Matiatia Wharf. This is near the island’s main town of Oneroa (there are lots of great restaurants here!). From the ferry port, you can easily access transportation options available on the island.
If you are planning a day trip to explore Waihekes vineyards, I suggest leaving Auckland no later than 11 AM. Many wineries will close around 5 PM so get to Waiheke early enough to enjoy the entire day!
How to get around Waiheke Island?
There is a reliable bus service on the island where you can purchase tickets right at the ferry port. This is the best option if you are planning to visit the Waiheke wineries. You can also take taxis, rent a vehicle, or bike, or book private transfers.

You can but you technically don’t need to. You can purchase tickets at the ferry port in Auckland once you arrive. If you are returning the same day, make sure to purchase a return ticket.
However, if you are visiting during peak travel season (December through February), I suggest purchasing tickets in advance. You can purchase a Waiheke Island ferry ticket here.
How much is the ticket for Waiheke Island?

Is it worth it to go to Waiheke Island?
100% yes! This is by far one of my favorite things I did in Auckland (okay, yes probably my favorite). If you are a wine lover, you can’t miss it.
My friends and I hopped on the Waiheke Island ferry from downtown Auckland and spent the day on Waiheke visiting three incredible vineyards for tastings and then watching the sunset with the best fish & chips on the island! It was the most amazing day. I couldn’t recommend a visit to Waiheke Island enough.
What is there to do on Waiheke Island?
Of course, the vineyards are a highlight of Waiheke but there are also many other things to do. There is a vibrant arts scene and many great restaurants and cafes. Visitors can relax on the stunning beaches, take scenic hikes, visit local galleries, join yoga sessions, or book a spa day! There is plenty to do on Waiheke Island.
