Top things to do in Lagos, Portugal
1. Explore Lagos’ Charming Old Town
For whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets, head to the quaint Lagos Old Town. This is the most charming area lined with cute boutiques, incredible restaurants, cafes, and fun bars. You’ll also find some historic landmarks here such as the Church of St. Anthony and Lagos Castle.
Lagos Old Town is a great spot to find a souvenir or gifts for friends and family. I also loved visiting early in the morning for coffee. The streets were so quiet, there was barely anyone out. The morning hours in Lagos are so nice. As for coffee shops in the old town, I loved The Studio Coffee. And this is one of the few cafes that opens early.
2. Watch a Sunrise in Lagos
You have to experience at least one sunrise in Lagos. It’s the most magical thing. You can walk along the boardwalk for sunrise or if you want a bit more of an experience, consider booking a sunrise paddle board tour.
3. Experience A Grotto Boat Tour
One of the most unique features of the Algarve region is its breathtaking sea caves and grottos found all along the coast just a short distance from Lagos. Exploring these natural wonders by boat is a must, with plenty of tour options to choose from.
I opted for a speedboat tour departing from Portimão, and it was an unforgettable experience. We cruised past dramatic rock formations along the coastline, with the thrill of the speedboat adding to the adventure. The famous Benagil Sea Caves were even more amazing in person, making the tour a highlight of my trip. If you’re visiting the Algarve, this is hands-down one of the best things to do in Lagos.
If you go to Portimão for a boat tour, I suggest spending some time here to relax on the beach. After our tour, we had the most delicious seafood lunch and then spent a couple of hours at Praia da Rocha. It was incredible. Book your cave tour here.
4. Ponta da Piedade
Ponta da Piedade is one of Lagos’ most iconic spots, renowned for its dramatic cliffs, striking rock formations, and hidden caves. The views are breathtaking, and you can explore this stunning area by walking along the coastal path, by kayak, or by boat.

Lagos is an ideal destination for water sports like kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, and paddle boarding. You’ll find plenty of tours available to experience these activities. If you prefer to go on your own, Praia da Batata and Meia Praia are perfect beaches for adventure.

6. City Walls & Lagos Castle
If you are looking for panoramic views of Lagos and the surrounding area, don’t miss the city walls. Lagos is a fortified city with ancient walls that date back to the 16th century along with the historic Lagos Castle (Castelo dos Governadores).
The city walls are free to visit and can be explored at your own pace. There are amazing views and wonderful photo spots along the walls. On the other hand, to enter the castle, there is usually a small fee. Inside you’ll find gardens and ancient structures about the history of Lagos.
This area offers a glimpse into Lagos’ rich history. I suggest visiting early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the heat.
7. Relax at one of Lagos’ Amazing Beaches
One of the highlights of visiting Lagos is undoubtedly spending time at its stunning beaches. Praia do Pinhão: Nestled between cliffs, this is a smaller and quieter beach to visit in Lagos. It’s a bit more “off the beaten path” so to say. There aren’t many amenities here, but it’s a lovely spot to relax and swim. If you are looking for a more secluded beach, check out Praia do Pinhão
8. Sunset Beach Picnic
One of my favorite moments from my trip to Lagos was enjoying a sunset beach picnic at Praia Dona Ana. It was such a wholesome experience! We packed wine, cheese, and plenty of snacks, and as the sun began to set, we found the perfect spot on the beach.
